GIMP version for non-destructive editing

If this is true, then GIMP will not only have the ability for non-destructive editing, but would indeed be superior to anything PS has to offer with respect to that. We shall see.

I'm pretty sure that the stated expectation is that GIMP 3.0 will not get non-destructive editing, and that addition is expected for GIMP 3.2. For example, if you look at the GIMP developer wiki roadmap (, there's nothing about non-destructive editing for 3.0, and it's there for 3.2: "GIMP 3.2, The focus of this release is going to be on non-destructive editing. Note that both adjustment layers and layer effects/styles are the terminologies currently used in requests by users. We haven't yet assessed, how exactly non-destructive editing is going to be implemented." (Emphasis added.)

So then one might reasonably ask: when will GIMP 3.2 arrive? One might guestimate somewhere in the 2024 - 2026 timeframe, based on the history (from

first release 1995
1.0 - 1998
1.2 - 2000
2.0 - 2004
2.2 - 2004
2.4 - 2007
2.6 - 2008
2.8 - 2012
2.10 - 2018
3.0 - before the end of 2021 seems plausible, with effectively the beta 2.99.6 out now and 2.99.8 expected soon-ish, but hardly guarantied

3.2 - best case seems to be about 2024. If 3.0 arrives in 2021, then it will be the shortest time to the next major version since 2008, at three years.
