EDIT: I may have found the solution already. The aperture setting on the Novoflex adapter should be set to "closed", meaning the smaller circle.

In addition, the adapter aperture ring could be used to ease focusing at smaller lens apertures, where focus peaking might show almost everything is in focus (due to greater depth of field), so hard to tell where the critical focus is - in this case, just twist the aperture ring all the way to "open" (bigger circle) to cause the lens aperture opening fully, making depth of field shallower and focus peaking better showing the actual focus.

Once satisfied, twist the adapter aperture ring all the way back to the other side ("closed", smaller circle) to have lens aperture back to set/desired shooting aperture, and take the shot.

This adapter aperture ring thus enables one to easily switch back and forth between fully open lens aperture (to focus) and desired lens aperture (to take the photo), simply by turning the adapter ring all the way to one of the sides. Otherwise, opening lens aperture fully would still be easy with lens aperture ring alone, but setting it back to desired shooting aperture would require effort to pay attention where you want it set (instead of turning the adapter aperture ring all the way to the other side without any thinking about it).
