Oddball argument?

Some recent discussions indicate that the GFX 100 offers little advantage over GFX 50.

In a way it is an interesting discussion.

Some folks claim that the GFX 50 models are a huge improvement over 24x36 mm.

So, let's consider the GFX 50 and the pretty contemporary Sony A7rII

  • The GFX 50 has a 9% advantage in linear resolution.
  • The GFX 50 has a 0.5 EV advantage in DR over the A7rII

So that may define a huge advantage.

Now, let's compare the GFX 100 with the GFX 50:

  • The GFX 100 has 41% higher linear resolution than the GFX 50
  • The GFX 100 has a 0.34 EV advantage in DR over the GFX 50

The way I see it the GFX 100 offers a similar step in IQ compared to the GFX 50 compared to the step from 24x36 mm to 33x44 mm. A bit larger if primary consideration is resolution.

We may also compare present generation A7rIV to the Original GFX 50:

  • The GFX 50 offers 10% less linear resolution
  • The GFX offers a 0.2 EV advantage in PDR

My take is simply that the GFX 100 is a significant evolution over the GFX 50, using the same metrics as comparing GFX 50 to same era 24x36 mm technology.

Now, I know that measurable factors are not ART, but from my standpoint I like measurables. For me, art is more about finding subjects, finding composition and the workmanship of making a great image. I would think those aspects are quite orthogonal.

A simple way to put it: a great artist shooting m4/3 will produce better art than a mediocre artist shooting Phase One.

But, some great artists do shoot Phase One: https://www.vieribottazzini.com/2020/12/phase-one-local-ambassador.html

One thing does not preclude another.

Best regards

Erik
