The Z lenses are bigger because of the bigger Z bayonet and as such you can't compare the two systems purely based on size/weight as the new lenses outperform those you used as a comparison.

I don't own a Z (yet), I too find that once I add the FTZ to use some of my lenses, an extra battery (at least) and a Z lens probably there won't be any advantage but you don't choose ML just for the size factor and, by the way, a Z with a little zoom or prime for a relaxed session sure is much more comfy than a D, my guess...
