Re: 3D experience

Once I finished the project I never went caving in Florida again. I didn’t realize it but I have claustrophobia. It wasn’t until I went in caves for the project that I was faced with some VERY small Places to climb through. The first trip with the club wasn’t too bad until they took us through a small crawl space, on our bellies, narrow enough I couldn’t move from side to side or raise my head because my helmet hit the ceiling. It was like going through a dirty air conditioning duct. The real problem started when the people in front of me stopped and there were already people in the crawl space behind me. The tunnel was about 30 feet long and I was somewhere towards the middle. I don’t know what’s going on and I’m starting to get this feeling like I want to get up and leave, like RIGHT NOW, but I can’t. A bit of panic starts to set in and I finally turn off my helmet light and pretend I’m in the biggest room I can’t see. That helped settle me down and the decision was made to back up out of the shaft because a wasp nest blocked the way we were trying to get out.

Most of the caves in our area are small and require, at some point, getting on your hands and knees, or on your belly, and crawl through small passages. There are caves with big rooms and you can walk around in them but nothing like Mammoth Cave. And there is not too much to see in Florida caves, some sand dollars, some crab parts and shells. At this point in my life, if I can’t walk in standing up and stay that way, I’m not going in!

I included a photo of me in what was know as the “Cashew Squeeze” and it was tight but not as bad as the one above.
