Why not look at the Slypod pro?

If you're thinking of just using what you have I don't think the risks are hidden. The risks are it might tip. It might not hold itself perfectly still. Both increase when you extend things.

Also depends on what you put on top. A light weight action cam? A lot less risk than a heavy video camera with a long lenses on it.
