There is no trend towards slow lenses. Lens like this are competing with consumer lenses not the Canon big whites. How fast was a 400mm mirror lens?

There is, for sure. Lenses slower than f/5.6 at the long end were an exception not too long ago (remember the BIGMA?) and have become more or less standard for consumer zooms in most mirrorless systems.

Mirror lenses are a different and fairly ancient thing in comparison. They are slow by design (and already considered slow when they were kind of current) and limited to a single fixed aperture by design.
