General novice tele lens question. What is a 300mm lens good for (not trolling)? I ask because most images I have seen with this lens were made with 1.4 teleconverter. I had a 70-200 VRII, but was not long enough at 200 for wildlife. Is next step 400mm vs. 300?

300mm is good for larger birds like tame geese and birds in flight that come close to you. It has a good MFD for butterflies and flowers, and is also good for full body portraits of people.

Great for head shots as well . This was shot with my Nikon 300mm f2.8 AF-S.

300 mm is a nice length. You are far enough away that you aren't : " in their comfort zone. ."
