Thinking of renting the Sigma 16
1

Hey everyone,

For our anniversary, my wife got me a groupon for three large photo prints. Yesterday I managed a nice family portrait in the golden evening light with my M50 on a tripod with the Sigma 30mm lens. That photo will be the biggest print, and I have another one in mind for one of the two others.

For the last one I would like to use a picture of my dog. I have some decent ones, but probably not any worthy of a large print, so I'm planning to shoot a new one. The shot I have in mind is a wide angle portrait in a scenic location, maybe on some rocks near the water either in the morning or evening with soft lighting. I could use the kit lens, but I would really like the best quality for a large print. So my question is, do you think it is worth renting the Sigma 16 for a planned shoot like this? It's $35 to rent it for 7 days. I'm not sure how much shipping would be.

I know some will probably recommend that I buy it outright, but I have a couple other lenses ahead of it on my wish list, and I think for most other uses, the kit lens serves me well enough at that focal length. So what say you? Rent the Sigma, or just do it with the kit lens? Or, third option, try it with the kit lens and then rent the Sigma if it doesn't turn out to my liking? That option is probably the most sensible, but I wouldn't mind hearing your advice on the lens anyway. Or ideas or samples for the kind of shoot I have in mind (wide angle scenic pet portrait), if you have any. Thanks in advance!
