What actually happened is that when Nikon began to remove the aperture ring from lenses they replaced the D designation with G.

Right, that sums it up pretty well... and thinking about it, is actually not that misleading in the end

Anyway... for anyone new to the system, that whole nomenclature is (and was) pretty confusing (it certainly was for me when I switched). And we're talking about AF lenses only, not the decades before those Let's hope that the Z system will be less complicated in this regard for the foreseeable future.
