I tried all the suggestions without much luck.
In the end I did a Reset which has fixed the issues I mentioned in my post.

Obviously I must have changed something.
Thanks for all the input I have learnt a lot

Yeah, stuff can definitely get goofed up! Glad this cured it for you.

I do still highly recommend using the Spot AF point for almost all shooting. It's been golden for me. Some samples in the following thread (follow the links too)...

Happy shooting!

Thanks R2
I will try it for sure.
Those shots are amazing. Looks like I'll need to buy a good zoom lens.
Is the 100-1400 worth the money? Anything else you'd recommend?
Robert

Many thanks! On the M6ii the Canon EF 100-400ii is king IMHO. Very sharp (even with the 1.4x iii), and the autofocus is very fast and accurate (even better than my 7D2 was). IME you’d have to jump waaay up to the RF 100-500 (+ RF 1.4x) on an R5/R6 to beat this combo.

BIFs are very hard though, and that’s where the big FF combo really shines. It’s better handling too.

Other folks have been getting good results with other lenses tho, so you might find a less expensive (and lighter) combo that fits your needs too. Larry Rexley’s modded 55-250 STM + TC comes to mind. And the Canon 70-300ii falls in-between. Sigma? Tamron? The M6ii will work with them.

The Canon 100-400mm mkII and the Canon 70-300mm USM mkII will give you the best AF speed. 55-250mm will be the slowest as it's not USM but stm. Sigma 100-400mm Contemporary sits in between, maybe closer to the Canon USM options, but still considerably slower.

I love 50mm (equivalence)
