The 1987 bubble burst

Prior to the late 70s, very few camera buyers bought sophisticated cameras like adjustable 35mm or medium format or large format.

Millions of people took pictures, but those millions were using simple cameras like Kodak Instamatics--essentially box cameras--or Polaroid instant print cameras.

That changed in the latter 70s with computerized 35mm cameras offering easy and reliable automatic exposure, and then in the latter 80s with automatic focusing.

Suddenly a great portion of that Instamatic market started buying SLRs. That was a bubble SLR market that lasted until cell phones became the new "Instamatic" and "Polaroid" in a device they were carrying with them anyway.

What is happening now is that the market for sophisticated cameras is shrinking to the proportion that it was in the 60s.
