Alright, whatever.

Just use a well exposed image and play with CST's. That's really all you need to do.

CSTs only have a set of predetermined fixed transfer functions. If the transfer function used by the camera doesn't match any of them, you won't get accurate results.

In fact, because you can't even review what the transfer functions used within the plugin ARE, they don't necessarily even work even when you DO know what the camera is supposed to be doing, because there appear to be bugs in some of the Resolve implementations that can't be directly identified. For example, the CST plugin always has black levels that are WAY off for Sony S-Log2. I've had extreme difficulty getting acceptable results for S-Log2 content using Resolve's builtin CST implementation of that transfer function.

However - implement the transfer function yourself from Sony's whitepapers using DCTL - boom, works fine and the black level is dead on. I've actually given up on CSTs in many cases because I don't trust them any more.

I'm going farther down the rabbit hole now than I had hoped. For now, I'm stuck with 8bit in camera. My goal is to capture the best video that requires the least amount of manipulation to look good (like most people.) Mostly to reduce editing time and create consistency. My feelings about this workflow right now are that it gets good looking video pretty quickly and easily even if not "accurate."

If you were to advise someone relatively new to video on what profile and workflow to use, what would that advice be?

I'm new to video but I have more than 40 years experience with still imaging in a wide range of commerical/professional applications.

I would just use the standard profile and use NDs to nail exposure. probably bring that footage into resolve. Make tweaks to the image, then create a LUT so you can create a faster workflow in the future.
