Re: Reality

Speaking of reality, I think some people may need to face reality that brand new L lenses and cutting edge FF cameras may not fit in their budget. There's no shame in running a crop system or using older EF lenses or even going with a DSLR. There are plenty of ways to enjoy photography for low cost in 2021. Demanding that a brand new pro FF system be "affordable" is probably not realistic.

Quite. When I first bought in to the EOS system, 30 years ago, I never dreamed that I would have as many L lenses as I do now. Or indeed any at all. OK, didn't cross my mind that I might turn pro either, but L lenses were expensive relative to earnings, and certainly didn't cover the range they do today. 8-15mm Fisheye zoom? Unimaginable. 16-35? Wild. 100-400? Wow.  24mm TS-E? Well the original version had just been launched, but the Mk II, with additional movement possibilities, was still some years in the future. Even the more mundane L lenses I own weren't about - 35mm f1.4 II, 50mm f1.2, 85mm f1.2 II, 100mm macro, 135mm f2, 200mm f2,8 - the 300mm f4 was. And image stabilisers? Almost science fiction at this point, as in my 70-200 f2.8 IS II and 70-300mm IS. Only my ancient 300mm f4 would seem normal. Even 24-70 hadn't yet appeared as a choice.
None of these lenses was cheap, but they were affordable. I'm now looking at and planning for my requirements for personal kit in retirement, and although I'm not abandoning any of these lenses - or giving up yet - I'm adding some RF cheaper lenses, as well as packing out my EF-M kit, because I don't want to carry the same weight, and frankly I just don't need the L lenses for personal work. I use most of those L lenses not because they're higher quality, but because they're faster - critical for some of my work - and tougher - they'll stand abuse and deliver every time. If I'm not being paid for my work, not having to take pictures in very dim lighting, then those aspects just don't matter, and I'm happy using cheaper and very much lighter lenses.
