what are typical shutter speeds you find useful?

x-sync to kill ambient. Klaus' note is relevant for some trigger / controllers. I mostly use CyberSyncs, which are awesomely fast (1/4000s). Don't know the latency for the more common Godox triggers.

Regarding meters, they are faster than 'blinkies', and the only way to reliably / accurately / quickly set specific ratios (e.g., 1-stop less on the background than on key+fill).  So it depends on what type of portraits you're doing.  Otherwise, the white-towel method works fine.
