I'm sure Raw shooters could do better - I'm lazy and like Pentax Jpegs.
2 things to note;
The normal af mode locks onto whatever it finds or recognizes on the points ie you need to keep the points on the bird - the less points you select the quicker it is but harder to pan. BIFS are the toughest of all action IMO. This mode adapts to your subject, it looks for a subject on the points.
Expanded area looks for what you locked onto with the centre red cross ie if you locked onto leaves with your first half press it will stay with leaves within the area selected.
If you missed the bird release the shutter and relock - pump it if necessary ie several presses as you pan.
