I believe you'll find that you get more consistent results using Manual mode on the camera with a fixed ISO value, with the flash set to TTL.  Try something like 1/160 or 1/125 shutter, f/4 and ISO 400 for starters.  When you're using Auto ISO, the camera tries to expose using the ambient light and that's why you saw ISOs ranging from 500 to 10,000.

If the distance from the flash to the subject being photographed is always the same, you should use manual setting on the flash for consistent results.  If the distance changes from shot to shot, use TTL.  With TTL, just remember that you can get over or under exposure depending on whether the subject is dark or light, so use flash exposure compensation if necessary.
