I shoot with a considerably smaller lens (the Nikon 200-500), but it is still too heavy for me to want to hand-hold most of the time. I use a monopod with a gimbal head, which is a relatively common birding set-up. If you mount your rig on a gimbal, handling is not awkward and the combination is not out of balance (once you balance the gimbal, of course.)  FWIW
