Is 135 f/2 and 2x III a weird/bad combination?

I used the 135mm f/2L USM with the Extender 2x III on 5D4 for wildlife during my recent trip, as I do not own a telephoto zoom, and wasn't brave enough to lug the 300mm prime with me.  This was the first time I used this combo and the experience was a bit strange.  AF struggled with objects that were either moving or a bit far away, overall sharpness was hit-and-miss (picture 1), and chromatic aberration was more obvious (picture 2).  The camera, lens, and extender all worked well stand alone.  And the lens had worked fairly well with the 1.4x II previously.  I wonder if I should have done something differently or should avoid this combination altogether in the future?  Thank you!

Cropped about 1/3 of its original size.  The marmot was barely sharp enough even though the camera seemed to have focused on it.

This was cropped more heavily, about 1:4.  CA is too bad for my taste.

The deer was much closer than the other two objects and barely moving.  I think the outcome was good.
