The OP is in the UK. Wikipedia says "Conocephalus brevipennis, the short-winged meadow katydid, is a species of meadow katydid in the family Tettigoniidae. It is found in North America and the Caribbean"

Did not appreciate that the 0P was in Britain. Sorry.

Common names vary throughout the world adding to confusion.

My “Field Guide to Insects of North America” by Kaufman differentiates among grasshopper, katydids, and crickets.
