The Canon S100 I own from 2010 is a fantastic camera to use even in 2021. The built quality is really high and the image quality is exceptional.

However, sometimes the focal reach is just not quite long enough so I am thinking about buying a Canon Powershot SX610 which has a focal range of 25-450mm.

For that you sacrifice a low aperture which I can live with but is the image quality as good as the S series? What about the built quality compared to the S series?

The specific camera I am thinking about getting is the SX610 HS.

You need to take in consideration that the S100's larger 1/1.7" sensor size (7.44 x 5.58 mm; 41.52 mm²) 12MP larger pixel size will provide overall better IQ than any camera with the smaller 1/2.3" (6.16 x 4.62 mm; 28.46 mm²) sensor with 20 MP with results in much smaller pixel size.

Would highly recommend you do some Google searches to find some S610 full reviews that have full size sample images you can review.

Just a 'quick' side-by-side' comparison of the SX610 vs S100 HERE.

The main problem is the higher image noise at the higher ISO's which you will need to use with the lens small max apertures in lighting less than bright daylight.

Cheers,
Jon
