Re: Would you buy The Canon R1 if it were 85MP

Based on 90D's resolution, a full-frame sensor with the same photosites density would be 82.7Mpix (and multiplicated by 2 for the dual pixel AF photosites).

When binning or line skipping (half the pixels) to decrease resolution from 82Mpix, there are still ... 20Mpix left ! The same as the 1DX2/3.

But binned pixels would be better for noise reduction and DR. If the line-skipping or the binning is cleverly done, the final result should be crisp enough to be used without restraint, plus gaining NR and DR. Why binned 20Mpix should be worst than native 20Mpix if the algorithms do a lot better than just keeping half the pixels ?

As far as quad-pixel AF is concerned, the R1 could be the first to use it (we saw the patent), but is it yet manufacturable today for 4x80M (=320M) sub-photosites and manageable for the processor(s) ? Not sure.

But the patent we saw a couple of months before for the quadpixel AF seemed to be for a 20Mpix ASPC sensor, based on photosites size. This would mean an approx 50Mpix fullframe Quadpixel sensor ! Yes, that's it ! A 51Mpix quadpix R1 should be a winner !
