I had the M5 for 3 years shooting everything from landscape to sports. I loved the camera for its size, IQ and abundance of customisable manual controls. I didnt love its random bugs. The shutter delay when using flash was cured in the firmware update, but my camera suffered from other bugs. I recall on numerous occasions using the 2/10sec timer and having to press the shutter button numerous times before it would fire. And that was with manual focus, so not an issue with focus acquisition.
I just couldnt trust the camera any longer so went for an RP and havent looked back. I'm sure the M6ii would provide the same consistent reliable performance.
100% !!
The M5 is a great camera, it really just needs a decent firmware update to take care of them. Shutter Release priority anyone?!
I did try turning the Exposure Simulation off, but ended up turning it back on because the live histogram is great and I've gotten so used to it. I'll just put Exp Sim in My Menu pages and will turn it off if I'm taking pics of kids sports or something like that.
For an upgrade, what drew you to the RP instead of the M6ii? I know it's a matter of time before I upgrade from the M5, and have been toying with that same decision for a while. But I just can't quite commit to the idea of going R. There's excellent M lenses, and the size and cost of the R lenses just isn't in remotely the same ballpark. This is just a hobby for me, so that kind of money isn't really an option. I'd honestly like to stay with the M's if there was really any assurance from Canon that they'd keep it alive for a while longer. But 2020 and 2021 haven't been reassuring for the M at all....
There were a few things in the end which swayed me to the RP rather than the M6ii, but i have had to sacrifice some features which although not a game changer, i still would have liked.
EVF - I didn't like the thought of having to buy an additional EVF for the M6ii.
Size - I originally downsized from a 60D to the M5 but having larger than average hands the M5 just wasn't as comfortable. Although not a lot bigger, the RP is much more comfortable to hold.
Performance - I know the M6ii has more MP (32 vs 26?) but 26 is more than enough for me. The M6ii also has better dynamic range on paper, but its not really and issue. the only time it would be an issue is for high dynamic scenes such as landscapes, but i bracket anyway. The RP also has worse burst mode at 5fps. I do shoot my sons weekly football (soccer) matches but 5fps is plenty for this. Its all sounding a bit negative, but having the full frame sensor just gives me more confidence to set the iso to auto and shoot away. Sure there's noise, but it's really not that big a deal.
Longevity - Canon have screwed over M users. No firmware updates for the M5, not releasing fast glass that we have been crying out for etc etc. The R series is where the money is being pumped into and allows me to use my EF lenses without issue. Also, since it's release, the RP has had firmware updates to provide the same eye AF as the R.
Price - Barely any difference between the RP and M6ii + EVF.
I'm sure there are other things but can't think for now.
There are loads of articles and posts slating the RP for having the 6Dii sensor with a dynamic range which doesn't hold up to its rivals. But i haven't an issue with it. As a system the camera is great, i honestly love it and it's rarely out of my hands where in the past i was grieved to take the M5 out of the bag. I got fed up waiting on Canon and glad i made the move. I now have the RP with Kit 24-105, Tamron 17-35 f2.8- f4, Canon 70-200 f4L and the Nifty 50. First time in ages, as a hobbiest, i haven't felt the urge to change or upgrade.
Check out Irene Rudnyk on youtube. She's a fantastic portrait photographer and uses canon mirrorless. She has comparisons with the RP and R and recently compared the RP, R, R5 and R6 in real world tests and the RP came out second.
