IAs a conclusion, at least for me, "standard" focals (17mm, 25mm, 45mm) reveal easier to use than more "exotic" ones (15mm, 20mm).

Putting both the 15 and the 20mm in the category of exotic ones shows your ignorance of lens history .the 30mm is indeed a odd focal length but this not TRUE at all for the 40mm

back in the film days , the 40mm FOV was a very common and popular normal focal length along with the 35mm and 50mm . Minolta had a M lens 40mm , the Rollei 35 most common focal length was 40mm.. also the canonet

Even todays most companies have a 40mm fov like fuji for both aps and medium format GFX. Sony just added a 40mm single focal length

and this is just for a start

20mm (or its 40mm equivalent) in 4:3 aspect ratio is different from the same in 3:2, at least I like it in 3:2 more, while couldn't get used to in 4:3.

first of all , that maybe so but that has nothing to do with what the person I was replying to wrote in his post .

Maybe you should only work with cameras having. a3.2 ratio then

Are your historical and current examples all in 3:2, aren't they?

This is really a show of bad faith

First of all , if you use the aspect ratio , then one should apply the same logic for the focal that you call standards ie 17,25mm and 45mm. You are trying to get it both ways

and no the GFX 50mm is not 3.2 ratio

There are endless arguments about what a true “normal” focal length is.  On FF, I find that 35mm is just wide and 55mm is just tele.  For me, aspect ratio matters less than perspective.  35mm has a small amount of foreground expansion and 55m a bit of compression.

20mm on MFT seems a very natural MFT FL for capturing what I see.  It may even be a bit boring, but that reduces distraction from the main subject of the image.

I also find that 3:2 is a more pleasing landscape ratio and 4:3 a portrait one.  Makes you wonder why paper orientation is so named.

While it makes sense that we each have our favourite FLs, it seems odd that everyone has to use what someone else prefers.  If you can buy it, you can like it.  I find the 20/1.7 works very well for certain kinds of photography, not least because it is small.
