Using a flash with a Canon AE1 ?

Hi all,

got a quick one, really new to flash in terms of manual exposure, was a daylight shooter for ages but ive had this small national PE 2005 flash that came with my AE1 years ago, never really used it, wanted to try it out for some night time bits n bobs.

It has a M and a slider which exposes what looks like a meter.

I know the flash sync speed is 1/60, and the ae1 has the meter inside that values of course for aperture to get correct exposure

when I stick the flash on, either in M or in 'meter' mode, the flash goes off as I fire the shutter as expected, to my eye I can't tell the difference if its more powerful or not in M or 'meter' mode, looks the same to me.

how would I go about getting the flash to TTL per se or is that not possible in my case?

there is a A on these FD lenses that I assume is just auto aperture which ive never really used, do I have to have this on to get the flash to meter or are they totally separate elements etc.

I have a canon p behind in this photo that the flash works with in terms of it going off , I think the sync is 1/50 on that, the flash fires, again same question is the auto exposure working in this 'meter' mode or how would I go about getting it to auto meter as the camera is fully manual

hope my waffling makes sense

lewis
