I'm not sure what you are actually brushing over but fwiw I brush various shades of grey on layer masks when I want to vary the effect of the layer mask on different elements in the layer.

The shades of grey in effect alter the opacity of the layer mask on those elements.

Black is 100% opacity, white is 0% opacity, shades of grey are between 0 and 100% opacity.

Yes, I typically use the brush to make a mask.  I select the brush icon, press D, and that gets me white/black foreground/background.  I can press X and it will switch them.  Is there an easy way to change it to various shades of gray?

I thought opacity is the control that should be used for this though.  Am I wrong?
