and I’ve had trouble putting it on my camera. It’s really tight. I don’t want to force it. Any ideas? Here’s a close up shot of the hot shoe if it helps.

As @robnich already stated, most likely the thumb grip is not original.

As you can see easily the thumb grip shown there is different than the one shown in Amazon. Especially the different orientation of the wider part, where you place the thumb, is very obvious.

How does your thumb grip look? As shown at Amazon or in the JJC webpage?

Another indicator that would have made me curious is the low number of reviews and the overall not very positive rating in the reviews.

From my point of view, based on personal experience, the best thumb grips are made by Lensmate. Definitely more expensive but definitely also great products.
