i have both (different generations)
If i had to choose one to keep it would be the 400 - simply because its more flexible able to use a teleconverter and get most of the reach for the same level of light.
600 may be a slightly faster AF'ing lens vs the tele but thats line ball.
The 600 is bigger/heavier and more expensive but yeah that extra 40mm is worth it to some, especially birders.
For me as a sports shooter I'd lean towards less reach and more cropping.
