Subject distance defines "proper" perspective for portraits, not focal length.

For APS-c , the usual recommendation for portraits is generally 50-58mm.  But this applies for tightly framed head and shoulders shots.  Use the same subject distance with a 28mm lens, and it's perfect for half-body shots.
