I really hope you are right--I owned all the tweener cameras.  The EOS-3, and the manual focus T90 and A-1 (the last was in fact my first camera).  And all of them were really enjoyable to shoot with, and all of them introduced things we had not had before to the camera world.
I think a not-quite flagship camera as a permanent part of the line-up would be quite nice.  I have an R5 and quite understand why the bird photographers like 45 MP (I do too when taking pictures of birds), but I think the R3 will be perfect for aviation and sports photography.
