I am an entomophobe, therefore I left this visit to the last. It was actually a most pleasant experience because all the butterflies and moths are so colourful and beautiful, which are very different from my childhood nightmare of ugly roaches and brown moths.

(Cambridge Butterfly Conservatory, Cambridge, Ontario, Canada)

I brought along the Fuji 18-135 which is excellent for "near-macro" shots (I am definitely not ready to get up close with a true macro!). I dunno if a 70-200 would be better - although it brings things closer, the minimum focus distance is also longer and magnification ratio lower. I have a Canon 70-200 f4 on Fringer adapter, which is much lighter and less bulky than the Sigma 70-200 f2.8. The native Fuji 18-135 lens definitely performs far better than Fringer adapted Canon lenses in terms of autofocus in low light.

The conservatory also has a hatchery, but nothing is emerging when I visited.

Hatched butterfly "drying" its wings (pumping blood to inflate it)

cocoons
