IMO the base-model M1 Mac Mini is one of the best Mac values ever when it comes to performance and price at $649. (A refurb costs $589.) A RAM upgrade to 16GB adds $180 (a refurb price isn't currently available) but if the software you use most benefits from it the upgrade will turn the Mini into a pint-size powerhouse.

It's too early to make specific recommendations. . . But the Apple Silicon Macs are the future and I would not go with an Intel Mac unless there are compelling reasons to do so.

excellent advice and summary.

I gave a M1 equipped MAC to my brother to replace his super old Mac mini from 2010 - investing in renovation would have costed me hours on end and would have lead to a speed increase of maybe 20 % or best case 30 %

On the other hand side the M1 MBA is probably 10..20x the speed of his Mac mini.

Always a question of budget of course.
