I don't need the speed nor the price of the faster Z 70 - 200 mm f/2.8 zoom lens , but a same focal length f/4 version that is sharp wide open out to the edges would be of interest (especially how clean the Z6II / Z7II are at higher ISO speeds) ... Your thoughts ?

Keep in mind Nikon has a 70-200 f/4 lens for the F-mount. It's a very good lens in terms of image quality, size, weight, and price point. But sales have been poor compared to the f/2.8 alternatives. This lens only sold 80,000 copies since it was introduced in 2012 - and camera sales are lower today. The 70-200 f/2.8 sold 500,000 copies since 2009. I'm sure that's why it was not on the initial Roadmap.

After the success of the 14-30 f/4 and 24-70 f/4, the market seems a lot more receptive to f/4 lenses as a lighter small alternative to the f/2.8 Trinity. I could see adding that lens.

The question is whether Nikon delivers a Z version of a popular lens like the 70-300 with a variable aperture, or a 70-200 f/4.

Would you prefer a 70-300 f/4.5-5.6 priced at $599, or a 70-200 f/4 compatible with teleconverters priced at $1099.

Thats interesting. How do you know what the sales numbers are? Is the 500,000 the cumulative sales of the 70-200 2.8 VR1+VR2+FL

I am surprised the F4 did not sell more and if it is a factor of it being introduced so late in the game (when so many already had the 2.8) or that the Nikon pro market was huge until the last few years and that those users are the one who will keep upgrading their 2.8 for the best current model.

There’s a serial number database around for Nikon products.

It relies on public submissions so take it as a best guess.
