They could definitely (upgrade the firmware for the M6 Mark II; they are both DIGIC8 with DPAF).

+1 They absolutely could.

The fact they haven't is interesting.

Unfortunately it’s par for the course.

Considering they haven't though, begs the question perhaps Canon is holding unto said firmware upgrade for an upcoming model?

That is what they like to do.

This is pretty common for firmware upgrades to get passed to the successor and not the predecessor.

Right.  It’s a way to pull in more sales/interest in the new model.

The M50 Mark II itself is a perfect example as Canon could pass it to the M50 Mark I for that matter.

That’s how it’s always worked with their DSLRs too.  With the notable exception being the 7D’s (very late) firmware and feature update.

I still hold out hope Canon may do a M5 Mark II.

Once Canon has filled out the lower end of the R line, it would only make sense to do an M5ii.  I highly doubt that we’d see IBIS though, as I believe Canon will always keep IBIS a point of separation between the two lines.

I'm not holding my breath for it though as some folks here have, but I think eventually. Eventually being maybe a year and a half from now. That's a long time btw.

Agree, that would be the minimum time frame.

That’s why I think it’s wise to take the plunge and benefit from the M6ii’s massive capability set right now, instead of missing out on it for the years ahead.  I do not BS people when I state that I can shoot anything >on< the planet with it!!
