So at base ISO, the AUTO setting is equivalent to setting the value to 100%.

I don't have enough experience with the camera yet, but the manual explains that keeping the setting at 100% may result in excessive contrast in high contrast scenes.

The 100% setting results in maximum contrast. The 400% setting provides maximum protection of detail in highlights.

The 400% setting only becomes active from ISO 400 to ISO 12800

It seems that the AUTO setting provides the maximum flexibility, without further attention from the photographer.

I don't want anything messing with the linear raw tone curve before it gets written to the file.

I'll do that in post if the image needs it.

My rule is don't do anything in the camera that can be done at least as well in post.
