The small-sensor point-and-shoot compact camera is dead, except for a few niches like waterproof "tough" cameras or superzoom travel models like the Panasoic ZS80/TZ95.

Large-sensor compact cameras (APS-C and higher) have a future, albeit as a profitable niche.

Certainly my Ricoh GRIII is the camera I use most by a wide margin, and the Fuji X100, Sony RX1 and Leica Q series have cult followings.
