I have done it under similar circumstance you have. My results were reasonable up to about 5 x 7 inches. But it really depends on the quality of the images in the first place AND most importantly the type of paper surface the contact sheet was printed on. If it was printed on a smooth surface like glossy or matt or pearl like the Kodak Type N you will get good to fair results. However if printed on the Kodak so-called silk, Type Y stock, which is pebbly you will get terrible results at any size.

The contact sheet I extracted images from was printed on a semi gloss matt surface and the results came out great. I used an Epson Perfection 4990 and the Epson software and the enlarging and setting controls were easy to adjust. You can easily change the enlarging and resolution settings to test and evaluate the limitations your particular contact sheet will allow.

Good Luck.
