That whole thing seems notably similar to the history of the Americas (and, to be fair, that of many other societies). If overpowering the prior residents through decimation and/or disease doesn't work, fall back on cultural annihilation. Then work at keeping the uncomfortable reality of what you've done swept under the rug.
