I get perfectly good results with an Epson V550. (I also use VueScan as my scanner software.)

I also had need of scanning large quantities of text pages, so I got a desktop document scanner. That scans surprisingly fast (2 sec a page) and in surprisingly good quality (even does colour at 48-bit, 300dpi), and two sided, so you capture any writing on the back.

I've been meaning to try it for bulk scanning old prints, at least for unmounted prints which are not too stiff (the paper path is slightly bent). I think it'll do a good job on prints, if it does it'll make scanning the box of family photos a lot quicker.
