Fledging House Wrens

I was fortunate to see and photograph a brood of House Wrens fledge from one of our nest boxes last week.  No claims of either artistry or technical quality of the photos, but I thought I'd share for those who have never seen young birds fledge.

There were 4 fledglings and I got shots of 3.  The first shows the first young bird flying off to the left of the image.

The second provided the most drama.  It initially slowly squeezed itself out of the box to the point that it was free to fly....and then turned around and went back.  An adult showed up with some food, and shortly thereafter the young bird was flying on its own.

The third was the only one where the instant of flight was captured.  Looks out of control, but it was successful.

Fledgling 1 taking flight

Fledgling 2 getting ready

One wing out

Almost there

All the way out

Oh-oh, maybe later

A little dietary enticement

Success number 2

Number 3 getting ready
