If you want megapickle, get the R5.

If you want performance and speed, get the R3.

If you to be a fumbler with all the bigger numbers at the expense of everything else like ergonomics etc. in order to show off at your geriatric camera club, get a Sony.

Not sure why this is so controversial.

Because some photographers need resolution and speed....

but most don't

How many full time press photographers are there? And how many are freelancers that take commercial assignments and have a different body for that, like the 5DIV or 5Dr?

If you're shooting for a brand like nike, you don't want to deliver a 24mp file for the next campaign, and you don't want to have rolling shutter or be limited to low FPS.

Depends on what you shoot for Nike. A campaign, probably will not use such a camera but a middle format one. When shooting a campaign there is no need for 30fps.

Competition/action shots? 18MP is enough for an A3 spread in a glossy magazine.

If you're shooting any action brand, you'll need action shots and A3 is not enough for a brand.

There will of course always be a market for a do-it-all. I just hope the R3 will not be that, and be priced accordingly. Closer to R5 than 1Dx mk3.

How do you know 18mp is not enough for a big brand? Do you shoot for them as a professional?

I was actually chatting to someone who does just that a couple of months back. He had recently shot two contracts, one for a motorcycle brand and one for a sports apparel brand. In both cases his work was hot on a 1DX3 and an R5. Shots from both cameras were used including one from his 1DX3 on billboards. As I said above, it is all about using the best tool for the job. In this case the 1DX3 was being used in rough conditions, bad enough that it needed a service afterwards. His R5 would almost certainly have not survived. For his studio shots he used the R5. Track side  he used a combo  with f both with different lenses.

Just enjoying photography
