Is there much difference between the V600 and the V39 for prints? It looks like the main differences are software and film scanning.

The main difference are the sensor systems used. The V39 has a CIS-based sensor system (Contact Image Sensor) while the V550/600 has a Matrix-CCD. CIS is not ideal for originals that aren't 100% plane due to the extraordinarily limited depth-of-field of CIS. Another disadvantage of CIS vs. CCD is image noise occurring more strongly with CIS. The advantage of CIS is the significantly lower design profile as well as the lower power consumption - Jan
