How big is too big a file size for web image files?

Generally speaking, when emailing or posting photos to the web, I try to keep them just under a megabyte each.

This is for general use, not for say, a photography website showing off my work.

I'm curious as to other's practices for general use and for something more specialized like their work page.

The goal is, at least for me to keep download times reasonable so people don't get frustrated waiting for the images, but to keep quality rather high.

I also don't know what screen resolution most people are using nowadays, I haven't looked at any web browser surveys of that sort of thing recently, if someone else has a clue do let me know.

This is somewhat of a spinoff thread from my 'better than JPG?' thread.
