You may be the greatest photographer but no clue about the technical side of it.

There is a big difference in throughput of a camera, and output file size. Yes, shooting at he rates you mention will send data through the camera at a similar rate. However, it is not all about that. When shooting a live event it is the final output file size that counts. Often those files will be uploaded to a website in seconds having to go through numerous stages. Often a set will be sent to an editor who has to quickly pick the best for their story and with little or no editing. Having a huge output file size slows down that process. Given the use many of that kind of image are put, there is very little to gain from using large files, so 24mp seems a great compromise.
