Social media is a group with its own characteristics that will influence the response.

It's the largest audience you can submit your artwork to by far, so it is going to have the largest percentage of the least sophisticated viewers that will ever see your work.

The medium that social media views photography on is by far the cell phone screen, which is tiny and over-saturated. This alone creates a self-filter for less complicated subject matter, not to mention the swiping through image after image quickly as social media users are bombarded with images. Images with bright colors and simple subjects able to be grasped in a 1-second swipe are more popular due to the medium.
