As a birder using APS-C my choice would be the 400mm F2.8 III and both 1.4x and 2x

If limited to a FF body I’d go with the 600mm but I’d find the size of the lens restrictive with the hand-held shooting I do in bush settings

I’m currently  using the 300mm F2.8 II and extenders with the 7DII and 5DIV, and also with a Metabones adapter on my m.43 cameras

My ideal (dream) setup would be the EF400mm F2.8 III (or an RF version) with a 32 Megapixel APS-C R7
