How to up my landscape game on a 'budget'...

I love my Sony a6500 & 16-70/4. The combo generates some wonderful images for me, until this last vacation... I did some landscape where the details just isn't there. There is a lot of technical aspects I can improve by improving my process, but...

More and more I am seeing the limitations. While I know the Alpha a7R IV with 12-24/2.8 would be GREAT, but so is the price tag.  Here is what I am wondering...  can I do it in steps?  Can I start with getting the 12-24/2.8 and using that on the a6500 and notice an improvement?  Then later upgrade to the a7R IV.  Are there better options?
