AF points for A7RIV in APS-C mode
1

In the Sony online specs for the a7riv, they state:

“35mm full frame: 567 points (phase-detection AF), APS-C mode with full frame lens: 325 points (phase-detection AF), with APS-C lens: 247 points (phase-detection AF)”

I am confused. Can someone explain why there are more AF points in APS-C mode when using FF lenses compared to APS-C lenses? I thought the number of points should be the physical number located in the cropped area on the sensor. Why does the lens image outside that rectangle matter for AF points?
