Does using the MC20 with the 300mm f/4 give good results?

I've just returned an Olympus 100-400 to B&H since, in the two days I was shooting  with it (birds and resolution chart) I was very disappointed in the soft images at 400mm and even at 300mm. I may have received a bad copy but I hate wasting time with what, to me, seemed like a lens I could not warm up to.

So, I can't afford the 150-400mm f/4.5 and the 300mm f/4 would be a stretch - but at my age - I don't give a damn as long as it's sharp using the MC14.

My question is, would I be able to push my luck by using the MC20 (which I'd have to buy as just now I only own the MC14) and get acceptably sharp images of BIF?

If the answer is no I still might get the 300mm f/4 since using the MC14 would give me a crop equivalent of 840mm in 35mm terms and that would do for 95% + of my BIF needs.
