Great video on lens design by a movie lens maker
7

Here is a great video on lenses by ARRI Lens's who make Cinematography lenses, used in many movies you will know. Goes into the compromises in lens design and why one design issue affects the another and what may have to be done to address it. Also states one of the reasons why still camera makers went ML and why there is a benefit of moving the mount closer to the sensor, plus a wider mount as well. They talk about focus breathing which is important not to have in movie lenses and have an impressive demo on that. Low focus breathing was a design consideration with a number of the Nikon Z lenses and why it may have a slight compromise with other areas. The Nikon 50 f1.2S compared to the Canon and Sony versions come to mind.

So, don't be so quick to criticise a lens unless you know the full story of compromises behind the design constraints as to why a particular lens may be so big, or so costly, or so heavy or is a few % points less sharp wide open or whatever - or a combination of some or all of those factors. Excellent bokeh, sharpness wide open, low CA, sharpness edge to edge, very low focus breathing overall character etc are the desired benefits, but we must be prepared to accept compromises elsewhere to get these as high as possible. If we can accept lower areas in one or more of these areas, then we can then obtain lower costs, weight, size etc.

Much good information.
